Information technology already is a decisive factor in our everyday life. This phenomenon raises questions of informational self-determination or heteronomy, technical reliability and dependence on the availability of technology, of data protection and state control. These issues will become even more controversial as far as technical devices pervade the human life.
The Institute of IT-Security and Security Law (ISL) of the University of Passau created a new lecture series about these topics in summer semester 2013 which is to be continued in winter semester 2014/2015. The “ISL Lecture Series” is concentrating on interdisciplinary themes between information technology and law.
In three lectures experts of science and practitioners will show their view on contentious issues of IT-Security and Security Law and the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the current questions.

Facebook, the new electronic German national identification card, the electronic health card, Google services, the “Bundestrojaner” (= surveillance software), the control of employees, cloud computing and governmental data collecting after 9/11- the challenges for data protection in an information society concern both academic research and practical application. The European Commission’s fundamental proposals for a reform at the end of January 2012 make a legal, political and technological discussion on possibilities and limits of effective data protection more important and urgent than ever.
The University of Passau was dealing with these issues in the summer semester 2012 during lecture time. In four lectures two representatives in the fields of science and practical application were discussing their experiences and opinions on current issues of data protection law.
The scientific direction was taken on by Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung, LL.M., Full Professor for Public Law, Information Technology Law and Legal Informatics, one of the directors of the Hornung, LL.M., owner of the chair for public law, information technology law and legal informatics and one of the directors of the Institute of IT-Security and Security Law (ISL) at the University of Passau.
